Problem and Opportunity
As part of the Yahoo Shopping article page redesign, the team saw an opportunity to bring more warmth and personality to editor and reviewer bios through custom illustrated portraits. With ~40 editors across the platform, I was asked to develop a scalable system and supporting guidelines to bring this to life. Collaborating with Ryan M, we crafted an aesthetic that felt both editorially serious and uniquely Yahoo, while intentionally tying it back to our broader illustration style to ensure consistency across the ecosystem.
Sketching multiple angles of the editors. I wanted to investigate if we should have the same angle for each editor OR a variety.
Exploring different color ways: muted but with Yahoo’s signature purple background (giving a premium and chic aesthetic), monochromatic, or colorful (using our brand colors).
There was a confidence, ownability, and seriousness that was felt with the colorful comps. And it threaded well between product and brand needs.
