Problem and Opportunity
The News team approached us with interest in exploring illustrated icons for Yahoo’s homepage — originally for an “Explore More” section. As we began developing the set, it became clear there was broader potential across surface areas like Astrology, Sports, and Trending widgets. This presented an opportunity to create a visual system that threads brand expression with product utility, bringing a more engaging and cohesive feel to the homepage experience.
One concept used multi-colored iconography based on our UI icons.
Another concept used a more illustrated icon style.
Shortly after, I began building the sports widget icon library to support Yahoo Sports. This was a great opportunity to extend our illustrated icon system into a new product surface. Each icon was intentionally designed to be readable at small sizes while still maintaining immediate recognition of the sport it represents. The goal was to balance clarity, personality, and consistency — all while staying true to our broader illustration language.
